About
LoopX is an Ontario-based technology leader specializing in "Physical AI" for the world's challenging industrial environments of mining. Originally founded at the University of Waterloo to develop all-weather autonomous delivery robots, Dr. Yu successfully pivoted its core technology to address the growing critical safety gaps in the autonomous underground mining sector. Focusing on building intelligent systems that combine high-performance sensors, edge computing, and advanced algorithms, solving for collision avoidance, situational awareness, and autonomous capabilities for heavy mining fleets and OEMs.
Project
Supported by the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), LoopX embarked to bridge the gap between autonomous vehicle software and the unique demands of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) mining fleets. Leveraging the OVIN R&D Partnership Fund and winning the OVIN-sponsored 5G Transportation Challenge in 2023, the project focused on the development and commercialization of a 5G Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) system and a multi-sensor fusion platform to utilize Vision AI, LiDAR, and RF sensing. This project was essential as it addressed the unique operational risks of silent-running electric machinery through 360-degree real-time detection in zero-visibility conditions.
Outcome & Impact
The engagement with OVIN and the Core5 ecosystem has delivered significant outcomes for Ontario's electrification and mining sectors. LoopX successfully transitioned its technology from R&D to full commercial deployment, with its Collision Avoidance System (CAS) now utilized by Tier-1 mining operators including Vale, Agnico Eagle, and Cementation Americas. A key milestone of the project was the public demonstration of a fully integrated system deployed on a Rokion electric vehicle at the NORCAT Underground Centre, deploying Ontario-made AI technology to lead the global mining innovation transition.
"Better motion detection is required for battery-electric mining vehicles, which not only run quietly but also accelerate more quickly because there is instant torque going to the drive wheels. By pairing autonomous perception with resilient digital infrastructure, we are building the 'eyes' and 'nervous system' of the modern mine. Ultimately, this technological evolution is about the workforce; we're not replacing the workforce, we're enabling it to evolve safely."
— Dr. Chao Yu, Founder and CEO of LoopX
This project was made possible through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN). OVIN is an initiative of the Government of Ontario, led by the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI).
